CR 828 is a member of the Caledonian Railway 812 Class. This class was designed and built under the supervision of the Locomotive Superintendent, John F McIntosh. He took as his starting point his famous Dunalastair II Class of express passenger locomotives and built a class of 'mixed traffic' locomotives capable of working fast goods services or stopping passenger trains. The first seventeen locos were built at the Caley's famous St Rollox Works in the Springburn area of Glasgow. The class leader, No.812 entered traffic early in 1899. The seventeenth loco, 828 , was delivered on 31st August 1899. All seventeen locos were built as passenger engines and were painted dark blue and fitted with the Westinghouse automatic air brake.
